NEWSLETTER March 2002

Social Meetings

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, March 19th at 2 p.m. in New Church House, which is in the grounds of Ormskirk Parish Church. The speaker will be Mr Martin McDerby of the Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service. Mr McDerby, from our local Fire Station in County Road, will be talking about Fire Safety in the Home. Did you know that there is a National Campaign to install Smoke Alarms and that they can be provided free of charge?

The annual Lip Reading Competition for the Club Shield will be held at this meeting.

Pub lunches are always popular, but we have not had one for some time. Let us fix a convenient time and place at this meeting.

Details of future meetings and the date of the Club AGM, due in April, will be decided at the meeting on 19th March.

Silver Jubilee

At our last meeting it was decided to have a day out in the summer months to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the start of the Club. Barbara Cunliffe, our treasurer, and our Chairman, Stan McCann, will tell you of the possibilities.

Mrs McGinn, who is gladly still a very active member of the Association, was the driving force behind the formation of a lip reading class in Ormskirk. This class first met on 22nd September 1976. Thirty-two people registered and the average attendance was over twenty. The Association was formally created at an inaugural meeting on 31st March 1977. A short history of the Association will be available at the next meeting.

Federation Meetings

The North Western Federation of Hard of Hearing Clubs is holding its AGM at the Link Centre, Union Street Oldham on March 23rd, followed by tea and a social evening. If any member wishes to go then let me know as soon as possible. The Club will not be arranging transport this year, but any member willing to go and represent the Club as a Delegate to the AGM (we are allowed three) will have travel expenses refunded.

The Federation annual Lip Reading and Clear Speech Competition will be held at Blackburn on April 27th.
